Answers to some frequent questions
about Energy Healing
What is Energy Healing?
Energy healing is a therapeutic technique that has been practiced to support healing throughout history and through many cultures. There are many forms of this work and ideas about how it works. I will give an outline here of the ideas I work with.
The energy field:
The main premise for energy healing in our time is that living things are surrounded and supported by a field of energy that they influence, and are constantly being influenced by. In Asian cultures this is called Chi, in Indian culture, Prana, in western culture it can be called the life force, aura, bioenergetic field, bioplasma or subtle energy bodies. Highly sensitive people are often able to see or perceive this phenomenon directly. This very structured field both surrounds and interpenetrates the human body. It is itself capable of health or illness, and is deeply connected to the body’s health and illness. In imagining the Human Energy Field, it is helpful to think of what we know and accept already about electro-magnetic radiation. If you have studied physics, you know that when electricity moves through a cord, it creates a magnetic field around it. We seem to work insomething of the same way, creating fields of subtle energy all around as we live, work, sleep and play. The fields of human beings (and other living things) constantly influence each other.
In energy healing, a healer allows his or her own field to resonate or interact with a client’s to directly promote energetic health. In the work that I do, I generally work with my hands directly on the body. The work between healing practitioner and client is capable of having positive effects on many aspects of the human being (physical, mental, emotional or spiritual).
Though the field is deeply connected to a person’s mind, emotions and spirituality, it is not necessary to think of yourself as “spiritual” to work with a healing practitioner. Energy healing is effective regardless of your belief system. You do not have to adopt a belief system to be supported by this work, nor would I want you to.
What can I expect during a healing?
I generally find it easiest to work with a client lying face up on a massage table unless we are specifically working on the spine. You are not required to do anything. I would only ask that you be open to your own healing process and to communicate with me if something is making you uncomfortable. I may begin by scanning your chakra system with my hand or with a pendulum to measure how well your energy system is working when you arrive. Or, I may begin by holding your feet to get a read on your energy system. I then slowly move up the body holding ankles, knees, and hip joints before placing my hands on the charkas (or energy centers of the torso and head). This is called a chelation. My hands generally heat up during this process, though not always. During the chelation I will usually feel that there is another area that needs to be cleared or worked with in some way, so I do that. I use my breath to help me charge and direct energy and may breathe very heavily during some parts of a healing. I close a healing lifting my hands over your forehead to seal your field. The whole process takes between 45 60 minutes. You will need 5-15 minutes after the healing proper is completed to integrate the experience and to share questions and experiences.
What you may feel during a chelation can vary widely, from a peaceful, relaxed state of semi-sleep, to anxiety or uncomfortable accumulations of energy or vibrations in different part of the body. It is common to feel cold during a healing. This is natural as energetic blocks loosen, flow or open up in new ways. It is also common to feel movements of emotions, such as grief, fear or anger, either during the healing or after. You may find yourself reliving difficult feelings or moments of your life. You may need to cough or move your body to another position. Whether you experience this as pleasant or unpleasant in the short-term, all of this is very positive in terms of healing. Releasing unhealthy patterns of energy usually requires us to feel something emotionally. Try not to hold this back. Since each person is completely unique, you may feel none of the above. If you feel nothing, it does not mean that healing has been ineffective. You will probably do some of the work during the week (or months!) following a healing or in the next healing. Each person is very unique in his or her process. I encourage you to respect yours.
What can I expect after a healing?
A client will usually finish a healing in a very relaxed state. You may feel slightly light-headed or spacey when you get up, as your field has probably expanded to be larger than you are accustomed to feeling it. If this is the case, give yourself plenty of time before trying to get up or drive a car. Always drink plenty of water in the hours following healing work, as the body will often detoxify during this time. Water is one essential part of follow-up care after healing work. Rest is another. If you can possibly allow yourself to rest or slow down in the hours after a healing, you will integrate the work more deeply into your body.
In the days or weeks that follow a healing you may have unexpected emotions come up. This is normal and desirable. Remember that you are actively seeking to accelerate your healing and growth process when you work with an energy healer. If you are very sensitive, this may mean that you will feel more, faster. Providing yourself reflective time can be important, and if you are working through a serious illness, it is essential.
What can I expect energy healing to do for me?
This is the most difficult question. What happens in a healing may depend most on what an individual wants and feels safe receiving. Healer and client set an intention for healing together. Since intentions are very powerful in this work, you can expect that working with a healer will most likely accelerate whatever process of healing you are on. However, while both practitioner and client can effect outcomes, neither one of us control them.
That being said, here are some general effects that I have observed when working with people that have been documented by others. Healing often:q
• Accelerates natural physical, mental, emotional and spiritual healing processes.
• Helps relieve trauma from accidents, surgery, medical treatments, grief or emotional distress.
• Gives temporary relief from acute or chronic pain.
• Enhances and compliments medical treatments for disease or physical injury.
• Aids in life transitions, including the processes of birth and death.
Is the Existece of a Human Energy Field supported by Scientific Research?
The human energy field has been scientifically investigated through electromyography (EMG) wave patterns at UCLA. These, and studies at other major universities, have substantiated the relationship between healers brain wave patterns and bio-energy, as well as the similarity between bio-energy and electromagnetic fields. Studies that have focused on electromagnetic emissions from healers have found surges in the electric potential of their skin as much as 100,000 times typical EEG recordings.
Though some direct measurement has been done on lower levels of the field, the main impediment to scientific measurement is that instrumentation for measuring the field is too crude to measure these finer emissions. The most detailed information on the Human Energy Field (HEF) has been developed by highly sensitive people who observe it directly. They have provided visual descriptions and detailed information on the structure and function of the energy field as it relates to the body. This information has a high level of corroboration from one observer to another and with the instrumental measurement that has been done.
Research on Effects of Energy Healing:
There is more and more research being conducted on the positive effects energy healers have on the process of recovery from illness. A few of the specific effects that have been documented in studies about energy healing are:
• Accelerated healing of surgical wounds and sutures
• Significant acceleration of burn healing
• Post-surgical circulation and breathing are improvement
• Enhanced growth rage of pre-mature infants
If I talk to a Doctor about this or ask to have this treatment in the hospital, they will think that I am nuts, won’t they?
There is always a chance, but you might be surprised. While there are still a lot of people who have a difficult time with the idea of energy healing, there are now a remarkable number of health professionals in practice who do know about these techniques and support their use. Most are on the cutting edge of medical technology. Many progressive medical schools now include these complimentary therapies in their curriculums for physicians, and are actively seeking an understanding of the mind/body relationship as an energetic phenomenon while they try to understand the most puzzling illnesses of our day. Some prominent physicians, such as the renowned heart specialist, Dr. Oz of NYU Hospital, work with healers in their surgery rooms based on their positive experience with these techniques. Nurses at NYU hospital have been practicing Therapeutic Touch (another energy technique) for over 30 years with documented results. Further, many state of the art hospitals are employing and teaching these techniques in their complimentary healthcare centers.
What kind of training do you need to be healer?
Training for healing varies widely. There are not now any specific regulations for healing work. Everyone has an ability to learn healing techniques. Many people doing this work have a natural gift that allows them to do offer healing services in a very positive way. If you have this gift, however, training can be important. There is fine training available today that can help insure that the work is offered ethically and competently. Healers generally hone their skills by learning from other healers. In my case, I have received two years of formal healing school training at the Barbara Brennan School of Healing, one year at the Lung Ta institute and have studied with other healers to learn the skills I now use in my practice. I am currently enrolled at the Institute for Core Energetics, a school for body-centered psychotherapy.
Can you see my aura?
Not usually. However, I do perceive a client’s energy through my hands and often get important intuitive information or senses about what to do during a healing. Generally, it is not too important to discuss this information because the healing is not about information. My experience guides me. What is most important for you is your experience within the healing process. You are the expert on yourself and your experience. If I feel that my experience will help you in some way I will share it with your permission.
Thank you for your curiosity and your trust.
